Call to action (CTA)

A call to action is the line, text or button that tells a viewer exactly what to do next, such as tap the link, follow or comment.

What a CTA is in practice

A call to action (CTA) is the moment you ask the viewer to do one specific thing. In a TikTok or Reel it can be spoken, written on screen, placed in the caption, or, in paid ads, attached as a button like 'Shop now' or 'Download'.

Organic posts usually need a softer ask than ads. 'Link in bio if you want the template' sounds like a person. 'Click here to purchase today' sounds like a banner ad, and people scroll past it.

Examples

  • Follow CTA: 'Follow for part 2, I'm testing the night version tomorrow.'
  • Comment CTA: 'Comment SIZE and I'll tell you which one I'd pick.'
  • Save CTA: 'Save this so you have the list when you need it.'
  • Click CTA: 'It's the first link in my bio.'

Each one gives a reason, not just an instruction. Our caption generator writes captions that end with this kind of reason-based ask.

Where to put it and why it matters

The CTA usually goes at the end, after the hook and the payoff have earned it. In a slideshow it is often the last slide; in a hook and demo video it follows the demo. Some creators add a light CTA in the caption too, so people who swipe away early still see it.

It matters because viewers rarely take an action nobody asked for. A clear ask turns attention into something you can measure: profile visits, link clicks, comments or sign-ups.

Common mistakes

  • Asking for three things at once (follow, comment and buy). Pick one per post.
  • Putting the hard sell in the first two seconds, before anyone cares.
  • Vague asks like 'check it out' with no hint of where or why.
  • Using the exact same CTA on every post until it becomes wallpaper.
