Talking-head video

A talking-head video shows a person speaking straight to the camera, usually framed from the chest up, often filmed on a phone.

What a talking-head video is

A talking-head video is the simplest video format there is: one person, facing the camera, talking. On TikTok and Reels it is usually filmed vertically on a phone, often selfie-style, and it is the backbone of most UGC ads and founder content.

It works because it feels like a friend talking to you rather than a brand broadcasting at you. Faces and eye contact also tend to catch attention in a feed.

A sample structure

30-second talking head
0-3s: Hook line straight to camera ('I wasted $200 on planners before this one')
3-15s: The problem, told as a quick personal story
15-25s: The product, with B-roll cut-ins
25-30s: One clear call to action

Our UGC script template uses this shape.

The structure is simple on purpose. Each part has one job, and if a line does not serve that job it gets cut. Thirty seconds is a ceiling, not a target; plenty of talking-head posts land their point in fifteen. Film a few takes of the hook alone, since that is the line you will most want to test.

How to make it better

  • Start mid-thought; skip 'Hey guys' and get to the point.
  • Cut out every pause and breath. Tight jump cuts keep pace.
  • Add B-roll when you name a product or feature.
  • Put captions on screen; many people watch muted.
  • Use good light. A window facing you beats most expensive gear.

Common mistakes and alternatives

Reading a script word for word is the most common problem; it sounds stiff. Use bullet points and talk through them. Holding one shot for 30 seconds without a cut is the second. And trying to make every post a talking head can stall a small team that has nobody comfortable on camera.

If that is you, faceless content such as slideshows or reaction hook videos can carry much of the load.
