Creative fatigue
Creative fatigue is when an ad or post format stops performing because the same audience has seen it too many times and starts scrolling past.
What creative fatigue means
Creative fatigue (also called ad fatigue) is the slow decline of a piece of creative that used to work. The audience has seen it, decided it is not for them or already acted, and now it mostly gets skipped. It is most visible in paid campaigns, where the same ad is shown to the same people repeatedly, but organic accounts feel it too when every post uses the same format.
It does not mean the product or offer stopped working. Usually it is the packaging: the same opening frame, the same face, the same line.
An example
A brand runs a UGC ad where a creator opens with 'I didn't believe this would work.' For two weeks it is the best ad in the account. By week four, cost per result has crept up, the hook rate is lower and frequency is high. The script is still fine; the audience is simply tired of that exact video.
The fix is a new hook on the same body, a different creator, or a new format such as a slideshow version of the same story.
How to spot and prevent it
- Watch trends, not single days: rising cost per result alongside rising frequency is the classic pattern.
- Track early-attention metrics like hook rate and thumb-stop ratio over time.
- Keep a pipeline of new hooks ready before the winner fades.
- Test hook variations on proven bodies; it is the cheapest refresh.
How fast fatigue sets in depends on budget, audience size and platform, so there is no universal number of days. Your own history is the best guide. Volume helps here: our hook generator gives you 10 angles to rotate in.
Common mistakes
Pausing a fatigued ad and replacing it with something completely unrelated throws away what worked. Keep the core message and change the opening. The other mistake is waiting too long: by the time results collapse, you have usually been overpaying for a while.
