Thumb-stop ratio

Thumb-stop ratio measures how often a video makes people stop scrolling, commonly calculated as 3-second views divided by impressions.

What thumb-stop ratio means

Thumb-stop ratio (sometimes 'thumbstop rate') describes how good a piece of creative is at stopping the thumb mid-scroll. Like hook rate, it is a marketer-made metric rather than a standard field in TikTok or Meta Ads Manager, so you usually build it yourself in a custom column or spreadsheet.

Definitions vary. Many teams use 3-second video views divided by impressions, which makes it effectively the same as hook rate. Others use the term more loosely for the first frame's ability to stop people. Whatever you use, write it down and stick with it.

An example

Common formula
Thumb-stop ratio = 3-second video views / impressions x 100

Ad A: 2,400 / 12,000 = 20%
Ad B: 3,600 / 12,000 = 30%

If both ads share the same body and only the opening differs, ad B's first frame is doing a better job. Whether it also sells better is a separate question you answer with downstream metrics.

How to raise it

  • Make the very first frame interesting on its own, before any motion or sound.
  • Use a pattern interrupt, such as an unexpected face, angle or object.
  • Put a short, bold text hook on screen immediately.
  • Make it look like native content, not a polished ad, so it blends into the feed.

Reaction-led openers are a common way to do this; see reaction hooks for the pattern.

Test changes one at a time. If you swap the first frame, the text and the music all at once, you will not know which change moved the number. Keep a simple log of each variation and its ratio so patterns become visible over a few weeks.

Common mistakes

Optimizing for thumb-stop alone can reward shock value that does not convert. Always check it next to retention rate, click-through and cost per result. Also avoid comparing your number to benchmarks from other brands; different products, audiences and placements produce very different baselines.
