Retention rate

Retention rate is the share of viewers still watching at a given point in a video, often shown as a curve in TikTok and Instagram analytics.

What retention rate means

Retention rate tells you what percentage of viewers are still watching at a given second of your video. Platforms usually show it as a curve: it starts at 100% and slopes down as people swipe away. Some also report the share of viewers who watched the full video.

It is closely linked to watch time. Watch time is the total; retention shows where that time came from and where you lost people.

An example

Imagine a 20-second video. The curve drops sharply in the first two seconds, flattens out, then falls again at second 12, right where the creator starts listing product specs. The flat middle says the story was working. The two drops point to the two fixes: a stronger hook, and a faster, more visual way to show the specs.

A small bump upward in the curve is worth noticing too. It usually means people rewound or replayed that moment, which tells you that part of the video is the most interesting, and a candidate to move closer to the start next time.

How to improve it

  • Fix the first drop first. The opening loses the most people on almost every video.
  • Cut anything that repeats. If a line says what the last line said, remove it.
  • Add a pattern interrupt or new visual right before known drop points.
  • Keep the payoff visible: tell viewers early what they will get by the end.
  • Make videos only as long as the idea needs.

For slideshows, think of each swipe as a retention checkpoint. A TikTok slideshow template with a clear arc helps people keep swiping.

Common mistakes

Comparing retention between videos of very different lengths can mislead you, since a short video naturally keeps a higher share to the end. Compare similar formats. Also avoid reading too much into one post; look for drop points that repeat across several videos, because those are the real habits to fix.
