How to repurpose TikTok content for Instagram Reels and carousels

Most TikToks can live a second life on Instagram, but a straight re-upload often looks lazy. A few minutes of prep makes them feel native. Here's how to handle watermarks, sizes, audio, captions, covers and posting order.

Why repurpose, and what to change

Making a strong short video takes time. Posting it once on one platform wastes most of that effort. Repurposing lets you reach a different audience on Instagram with work you've already done.

The goal isn't to hide that the content exists elsewhere. It's to make it look like it belongs on Instagram: no other app's watermark, the right size, audio that works, and a caption written for that platform.

  • Videos become Reels, usually at the same 9:16 size.
  • TikTok photo mode slideshows become Instagram carousels, ideally resized to 4:5.
  • Captions, hashtags, covers and audio get adjusted for each.

Export without the watermark

Videos saved from the TikTok app carry a TikTok watermark. Instagram has said it may show less of content that visibly comes from other apps in recommendations, and the watermark also looks off-brand. Avoid it from the start.

  1. Keep the original file. Edit in CapCut, your phone's editor or a desktop tool and export the final video to your camera roll before posting anywhere.
  2. If you edit inside TikTok, save a draft copy to your device before publishing; check whether your app version offers a save option without the watermark.
  3. Don't rely on third-party watermark removers. They're often low quality, may break terms of service, and can carry security risks.
  4. Keep text and stickers burned into the export, but leave TikTok-only elements (polls, links, TikTok text-to-speech) out of the Instagram version or replace them.

💡Make 'export master file' a fixed step in your workflow. One clean master per post makes every later platform easy.

Sizes: 9:16 videos, 4:5 carousels

Vertical video works on both platforms at 1080×1920 (9:16). Instagram may crop the Reel preview in the profile grid toward a squarer shape, so keep key text away from the very top and bottom of the frame.

Slideshows need more care. TikTok's photo mode displays tall 9:16 images well, but in the Instagram feed carousels top out at 4:5 portrait, so 9:16 slides get cropped or letterboxed. Resize to 1080×1350 and re-check text placement. Our Instagram carousel size guide has the details.

Audio and captions

Trending TikTok sounds don't always exist in Instagram's audio library, and commercial music licensing can differ for business accounts on each platform. If your video relies on a TikTok sound, swap in a similar track from Instagram's library or use original audio.

Rewrite captions rather than pasting them. Instagram audiences read longer captions on carousels and educational Reels, so you can add a short summary. Keep three to five focused hashtags. Our guide to TikTok captions and hashtags covers both platforms, and the free caption generator can draft a fresh version.

  • Lead with the keyword phrase in the first line.
  • Replace TikTok-specific CTAs ('stitch this', 'duet me') with Instagram ones ('send this to a friend', 'save for later').
  • Add alt text to carousel slides; it helps accessibility and gives Instagram more context.

Cover images

Your Instagram profile grid shows covers, so they matter more there than on TikTok. Pick a frame or upload a custom cover with a short, readable title and keep it within the area that survives the grid crop.

Keep covers consistent across a series. Same font, same color block, same position for the title. When someone lands on your profile, a tidy grid of readable covers tells them what the account is about faster than any bio line.

For carousels, the first slide is the cover. It should carry the hook in large text and make the swipe feel worth it. If the TikTok version opened on a visual with small text, add a stronger title slide for Instagram.

Posting order and timing

A simple rule: post on the platform where you test first, wait a day or two, then repurpose what performed well. Many brands test on TikTok because feedback comes fast, then bring winners to Instagram.

  1. Post on TikTok and watch the first 24–48 hours.
  2. Pick posts with strong retention, saves or shares.
  3. Adapt them: clean export, resize, new caption, cover, audio.
  4. Post to Instagram at a time your followers are active.
  5. Track results separately; a TikTok winner doesn't always win on Instagram.

Spacing your Instagram posts a few days after TikTok also stretches one idea across more of your calendar. Plan it with a content calendar template.

What not to repurpose

Not every TikTok travels well. Some posts depend on context that only exists on TikTok, and forcing them onto Instagram just adds weak posts to your grid.

  • Replies to TikTok comments that show the comment sticker and make no sense without the thread.
  • Duets and stitches built around someone else's video, unless you have their permission and the post stands on its own.
  • Trend posts tied to a sound or format that hasn't reached Instagram, or has already passed there.
  • Posts that underperformed on TikTok for a clear reason, like a weak hook. Fix the hook first, then post the new version.

Skip the resizing step

UGCHooks builds both versions from the start. Each slideshow comes as 1080×1920 slides for TikTok photo mode and 1080×1350 slides for Instagram carousels, with no watermark, plus a caption and hashtags. Reaction hook videos export as clean 720×1280 MP4s you can post as Reels.

Questions

Can I post the same video on TikTok and Instagram?

Yes. Export a clean version without the TikTok watermark and adjust the caption, audio and cover for Instagram.

Does Instagram penalize TikTok watermarks?

Instagram has said it may recommend less content that's visibly recycled from other apps, and watermarks are the obvious signal. Posting a clean export avoids the issue.

What size should a TikTok slideshow be on Instagram?

Resize slides to 1080×1350 (4:5) for a feed carousel, or turn them into a 9:16 Reel.

Should I post on TikTok or Instagram first?

Post first wherever you get feedback fastest, often TikTok, then repurpose the posts that performed well.

Can I use TikTok sounds on Instagram?

Only if the same track is available in Instagram's audio library for your account type. Otherwise use a similar track or original audio.
