TikTok Photo Mode: The Complete Guide

Photo mode lets you post a set of still images on TikTok that viewers swipe through, with a sound underneath. It is the fastest way to publish useful content without filming. Here is how it works and when to use it.

What is TikTok photo mode?

Photo mode is TikTok's format for image posts. Instead of a video that plays on its own, viewers see one image at a time and swipe sideways to move through the set. A sound plays the whole time, and the post has a title, caption and hashtags like any other.

Photo posts appear in the For You feed, on your profile and in search, mixed in with videos. Most people call them TikTok slideshows or carousels. If you want the step-by-step build, read how to make a slideshow on TikTok.

TikTok photo mode specs

SettingRecommendationNotes
Image size1080×1920 px9:16 vertical fills the screen with no bars.
Aspect ratio9:16Other ratios display with blank space around them.
Number of photos5 to 7 for storiesThe app allows far more (35 at the time of writing).
File typeJPG or PNGPNG keeps text edges crisp.
SoundAlways add onePick from TikTok's library; business accounts use the Commercial Music Library.
Text placementMiddle 60% of the frameKeep clear of the bottom caption area and right-side buttons.

Exact limits change as TikTok updates the app, so if you plan a very long post, check the limit in the upload screen first. For everyday posts you will never hit it.

Images in other shapes still upload, but they won't fill the screen. A 4:5 Instagram carousel slide shows with empty space above and below it, which looks unfinished next to full-screen posts. If you post to both apps, export two versions of each slide: 1080×1920 for TikTok and 1080×1350 for Instagram. Our Instagram carousel size guide covers the second one.

How many photos should you use?

Use as many as the idea needs and no more. A list post might need eight slides; a quick before-and-after might need two. For a product story, six slides is a reliable default: hook, problem, turn, proof, result, call to action.

  • 2 to 3 slides: comparisons, before and after, a single surprising fact.
  • 5 to 7 slides: stories, tutorials, product explainers, mini case studies.
  • 8 to 10 slides: listicles where every item is genuinely useful.
  • More than 10: only for reference posts people will save, like checklists or recipes.

Ready-made structures are in the TikTok slideshow template.

Music, titles and captions in photo mode

Sound matters even in a format people read. It sets the tone instantly and photo posts without audio can feel unfinished. Choose something that matches the mood of the slides and trim it so the recognizable part starts on slide one.

Photo posts have a short title field as well as the caption. Use the title as a second hook and the caption for context, a question to prompt comments, and keywords people search for. Our caption generator writes caption options from a short description, and the hashtag generator suggests a focused set of tags.

💡Write the text on the images, not in TikTok's text tool. Baked-in text gives you full control of layout, survives reposting and looks identical on every device.

Photo mode vs video: when to use which

Use photo mode whenUse video when
The value is in the words: tips, steps, lists, storiesThe value is in motion: demos, textures, transformations in real time
You can't or don't want to be on cameraA face and voice build trust you need, like coaching or services
You want people to save the post for laterYou want people to watch a reaction or result happen
You need to publish a lot, quicklyYou have footage or time to film

Most accounts do best with a mix. Slideshows are great for testing angles cheaply; once one lands, turn it into a video. A reaction hook video is a good middle ground: a short clip with the hook on screen, followed by your product.

Photo mode post ideas that suit the format

Some ideas are simply better as swipeable images than as video. If your post fits one of these, photo mode is probably the right choice.

  • Step-by-step guides where each slide is one step, like a recipe or a setup process.
  • Ranked lists: 'every budgeting app I tried, ranked' with one item per slide.
  • Before and after sets, where the swipe itself is the reveal.
  • Mini case studies: problem, what changed, result, in four slides.
  • Myth versus fact posts, alternating slides.
  • Product round-ups and gift guides, with one product and one honest line per slide.
  • Checklists people screenshot and come back to.

Ideas that depend on motion, sound or a person's delivery, such as a texture close-up, a joke with timing or a live demo, usually work better as video. For more ideas sorted by format, see TikTok content ideas for business.

Photo mode best practices

  1. Make slide one a headline, not a logo. It is the only slide most people see before deciding to swipe.
  2. Use one idea per slide and big, high-contrast text.
  3. Give every slide a reason to swipe: an unfinished list, a question, a cliffhanger.
  4. Keep a consistent visual style so the set feels like one post.
  5. End with a specific ask: save, follow, comment a word, or check the link in bio.
  6. Post several different angles before judging the format. One post is not a test.

Make photo mode posts in bulk

Photo mode is quick per post, but finding what works means posting a lot of different angles. That's where most of the time goes. The TikTok slideshow generator in UGCHooks reads your product page and writes 40 six-slide slideshows at 1080×1920, each with its own hook angle, caption and hashtags.
