Instagram Reel Hooks: 50 Examples and How They Differ From TikTok
A hook that works on TikTok often works on Reels, but not always. Instagram viewers arrive from different places, see your cover on your profile, and often know you already. Here is how to adjust, with 50 IG Reel hooks to start from.
Why Reels hooks are not just TikTok hooks
The basic job is the same: stop the scroll in the first seconds. If you're new to hooks, start with our guide to writing TikTok hooks, since the principles carry over. The differences come from where Reels get watched and who is watching.
| Factor | TikTok | Instagram Reels |
|---|---|---|
| Where views come from | Mostly the For You feed, from strangers | A mix of followers' feeds, the Reels tab, Explore and shares in DMs |
| Relationship | Viewer usually doesn't know you | Viewer often follows you or a friend sent it |
| Profile view | Videos shown as a vertical grid | Reels mixed into your profile grid, so the cover matters more |
| Tone that fits | Raw, fast, trend-led | Slightly more polished; aspirational and practical both work |
| How it spreads | Watch time and rewatches | Watch time plus sends, saves and shares to Stories |
The 3-second hold
On Reels, the first three seconds decide whether someone stays or swipes. That window has to show three things at once: who this is for, what they'll get, and a reason to wait for it.
- Start on motion or a face, not a still title card. A static open looks like an ad.
- Put the hook text on screen in frame one. Many people watch Reels muted.
- Cut the warm-up. No 'so today I wanted to', no logo intro.
- Show a glimpse of the payoff early: the finished result, the after shot, the final number.
Your Reels insights show how viewers drop off. If most leave in the first few seconds, rewrite the hook before changing anything else. Hook rate and retention rate are the two numbers to watch.
Covers, captions and on-screen text
Instagram has more surfaces where your hook gets judged before anyone presses play. Use all of them.
- Cover: choose a frame or upload a custom cover with the hook in large text. On your profile grid the cover is cropped to a taller-than-square thumbnail, so keep the text in the middle.
- On-screen text: keep it in the center of the 9:16 frame. The caption, username and buttons cover the bottom and right edges.
- Caption: the first line shows before 'more'. Make it a second hook or a question, not a repeat of the on-screen text. The caption generator can draft options.
- Auto captions: turn them on or add your own subtitles so spoken hooks work muted.
💡Write a hook for the cover and a different one for the first second. The cover sells the click from your profile; the first second sells the stay in the feed.
20 Instagram Reel hooks you can adapt
Swap in your own topic, number or audience. They are grouped by what they ask the viewer to do.
- Save this before your next grocery run.
- Send this to the friend who always says they have no time to cook.
- If you're a {{audience}}, stop scrolling for 10 seconds.
- The {{product type}} I keep rebuying, and the one I returned.
- I tested this for 30 days so you don't have to.
- What {{amount}} gets you at {{place}} right now.
- 3 mistakes I made in my first year of {{activity}}.
- This is your sign to finally fix your {{problem}}.
- Watch until the end for the before and after.
- Things I'd tell myself before starting {{journey}}.
- The 10-minute version of my {{routine}} routine.
- Here's what nobody shows you about {{topic}}.
- Rating every {{thing}} I tried this year.
- You don't need {{expensive thing}}. You need this.
- How I {{result}} without {{common sacrifice}}.
- A day in my life running a {{business}} from home.
- Unpopular opinion: {{belief}}.
- I wish I'd found this sooner.
- Small change, huge difference in my {{area}}.
- Here's exactly what I'd do if I started {{thing}} today.
To make any of these stronger, add a detail only you can supply. 'I tested this for 30 days' gets better as 'I tested a $14 retinol for 30 days on rosacea-prone skin'. The structure gets attention; the detail makes it believable.
Hooks 1 and 2 are Instagram-native: they ask for saves and sends, which are central to how Reels spread. More angles are on the hooks hub.

Common Reel hook mistakes
- Reposting a TikTok with the TikTok watermark. It looks recycled; export a clean version instead.
- A cover that doesn't match the first second. If the cover promises a result, the Reel should open on it.
- Hook text placed low in the frame, where the caption and username cover it.
- Starting with the brand name. Followers already know who you are; tell them why this Reel is worth their time.
- One hook for every Reel. A recognizable series opener is fine, but the line after it should change every time.
Hooks for Reels you don't film yourself
You don't need to talk to camera to have a strong Reel hook. A short reaction clip with the hook written on screen, followed by your product, works on Reels just as it does on TikTok. That is the format behind our reaction hook videos: a 5-second reaction with the hook on screen, three short story lines, then a product card.
If you'd rather post stills, turn the hook into slide one of a carousel. Carousels live in the same feed and get the same scrutiny in the first second. The Instagram carousel generator builds 1080×1350 carousels from a product link, each starting with a different hook.
Testing Reel hooks
- Keep the body of the Reel the same and change only the hook text and first shot.
- Post versions a few days apart, or use trial Reels if your account has them, which show a Reel to non-followers first.
- Compare how many viewers stay past the opening, then sends and saves.
- Double down on the winning angle with new wording.
UGCHooks writes hooks across 13 angles and turns them into Reels-ready reaction videos and carousels, so you have enough variations to test properly.
Questions
What are good hooks for Instagram Reels?
Hooks that name a specific viewer or situation and promise a payoff in the first three seconds, like 'Save this before your next grocery run' or 'Send this to the friend who always says they have no time to cook'. This page lists 50 to adapt.
What is a hook on Instagram Reels?
The first one to three seconds of a Reel, including the opening shot and on-screen text, that convinces someone to keep watching.
Do TikTok hooks work on Instagram Reels?
Often, yes. Adjust for Reels by making the cover readable on your profile and by asking for saves and sends, which matter more on Instagram.
Should my Reel cover have text?
Usually, yes. A short hook in large text helps people choose your Reel from your profile grid. Keep it centered so the grid crop doesn't cut it.
How long should a Reel hook be?
Aim for the hook to land within the first three seconds, in one short line of text.
